Thế nhưng, Nữ hoàng yêu quí đột ngột từ trần đã thức tỉnh Ryonen về các pháp vô thường. Vì vậy mà cô khao khát học thiền. Tuy nhiên, Ryonen đã phải gác ước mơ của cô sang một bên vì họ hàng ép cô lập gia đình. Ryonen chấp nhận lập gia đình với điều kiện là sau khi sinh 3 con, cô sẽ được quyền tiếp bước trên con đường học thiền của cô.
Sau khi sinh hạ 3 con, cô từ giã gia đình trước khi bước vào tuổi hai mươi lăm. Vì chồng và gia quyến không thể ngăn cản ước mơ của cô nên Ryonen đã lên đường tầm sư học đạo. Trên con đường tầm sư học thiền, Ryonen đã đến thành phố
Sau đó, Ryonen tìm đến thiền sư Hakuo. Vị thiền sư này cũng từ chối cô, nói rằng sắc đẹp của cô có thể là nguyên nhân duy nhất gây nên phiền toái. Với ý chí quyết tâm học thiền, Ryonen lấy một bàn ủi nóng áp lên mặt đốt cháy sắc đẹp của cô trong giây lát. Khi đó, thiền sư Hakuo đã chấp nhận cô làm đệ tử.Để ghi nhớ sự kiện này, Ryonen viết một bài kệ lên mặt sau của một tấm gương:

Ryonen a Buddhist nun was born in 1797. She was the granddaughter of the famous Japanese warrior Shingen
However the sudden demise of the beloved empress awakened her to the impermanence of things. She hence desired to study Zen.
However her wish was brushed aside as her relatives pushed her into getting married. Ryonen assented for the marriage with the condition that after the birth of three children, she would go on her way to study Zen.
Ryonen did leave home after the birth of three children before she was twenty five. With her relatives and husband unable to dissuade her in her venture, Ryonen set out to learn Zen.
Ryonen on her embarkment to learn Zen, came to the city of
Ryonen then went yo master Hakuo who also rejected her saying that her beauty could only cause trouble. Ryonen in her staunch determination to study Zen, placed a hot iron rod her face burning away her beauty in an instant. Hakuo then accepted her as his disciple.
Ryonen then wrote a poem, commemorating the incident on the back of a little mirror.
Ryonen, when she was about to pass away wrote another poem:
